Innovative superstructure design which allowed for erection of the trusses in pairs, and unorthodox footing design using tension piles contributed to the winning of the tender.

A 71.4 metre clear span three pinned arch structure won the contract for this project for Leighton Contractors by a clear margin, in a design and construct tender.
We disregarded the structural concept in the tender documents which used four layers of structure, and opted for a simpler system with only two layers - trusses and purlins. In addition, we adopted an innovative footing system using 1.0 metre x 1.0 metre strip footings and relatively short tension piles for hold-down and lateral resistance. Conventional piled footings to provide support for gravity loads could not be used because the existing structure was founded on high level pad footings which were designed for some settlement.
