The building occupies the whole of the Martin Place frontage between George Street and Pitt Street.
The heritage Sydney GPO building was constructed in three main stages between 1865 and 1900, the first stage being opened in 1874. The redevelopment of the site comprised a new 26 storey office tower, a new 31 storey tower for the Westin Sydney hotel and incorporation of the heritage building into the hotel. A five level basement provides parking for 430 cars.
The office tower has a nett lettable area of 40,000 square metres.
The 5-star hotel comprises 390 rooms in the new tower and 50 rooms in the heritage building, and includes a ballroom with a capacity to seat 1,000 guests in a column-free setting. To incorporate the heritage building into the new Westin Hotel, it was necessary to provide extensive new structural works to accommodate hotel occupancy requirements, to improve the seismic resistance of the building and to protect vulnerable but historically-significant structural elements.
